Midterm tomorrow
January 31, 2006 04:34AM
Barely added the class last week and found out midterm was tomorrow. Yikes! Much reading to do. Barthes, Benjamin (ben-yah-meen) and more hard to pronounce names. Fooey.
On the other hand, my "smitten-ness" w/ Hugh Laurie has now evolved into full blown obsession. He's so hot, smart and funny! Usually when one is obsessed with a particular person, anything bad you find about the person usually turns you off but w/ Mr. Laurie his personal problems w/ depression, etc (well documented) has only made him more real to me and his articulation of his problems in interviews has somehow connected to me very deeply which is a little wierd in the scary kind of way. I don't think I've ever been so obsessed so quickly about anyone...not even [gasp!] Bowie.
However, I'm not about to go stalking him. Actually I'm more in love w/ the character House than the actor. My obsession w/ the human being Laurie has two um, facets shall we say, one being more a shallow "he's friggin hot" visual appeal but the second is a genuine interest in how his mind works as I see myself very much reflected in him/his history (well emotionally anyways).
Example:
Speaking about the moment he realized his depression at a stock car racing charity event:
"There were cars exploding and turning over and it was life or death, but it suddenly hit me: I was bored. I though, "This can't be right. I should either be hating it with every fiber of my being or loving it, because this is an extreme experience." I realized this was the state of mind of a depressed person. I diagnosed myself and decided I would try to sort it out. I was amazed that people put up with it.. I would cling to unhappiness because it was a known familiar state."
The quote is probably unsignificant to readers, but for me it honestly hit a note deep inside me. It was hearing his experience that helped me identify my own experiences. Right now, I don't think I have the guts to type out into letters and words exactly what it was in me but its been on my mind ever since and somehow for him to be able to articulate that thing inside me I myself couldn't articulate is something quite special. How absolutely retarded this all sounds, most of which doesn't even make sense but there it is..
Anyways. While I try to figure this out, there's no harm in indulging the visual side of this obsesssion right?

Recommended Tunes For Today:
In Classical music mood this time.
+ Giuseppe Tartini - Violin Concerto in D minor, Allegro
(beautiful piece almost too pink and pretty but I don't care, I like it.
There isn't much info on him out there why is that??)
+ Camille Saint Saens - The Swan (from The Carnival of The Animals): Yo-Yo Ma
(I love saying his name. So complicated, so french)
+ Max Bruch - Violin Concerto No. 1 in G Minor, Op. 26 Allegro: Itzhak Perlman conducted by Andre Previn; or Joshua Bell and Sir Neville Marriner
(totally romantic)
+ Erik Satie - Gymnopedia No. 1
(from his Trois Gymnopedies series. Stupid commercial almost ruined this song)
+ Erik Satie - Six Gnossienes No 1 Lent
+ Zoe Keating - Walking Man
(not totally classical but I'm a sucker for cellos)
+ Bach - Suite for Cello Solo No 1 in G: Janos Starker or Yo-Yo Ma
(actually if you listen to Yo Yo Ma's version I'd recommend the 1985 version. It has grown on me very much. If you choose Starker, I like the one w/ Gyorgy Sebok)
+ John Corigliano - The Red Violin: Joshua Bell
(who knew a movie about a violin could be such a nail biter?)
Hugh Laurie, House
January 19, 2006 05:00AM

Am. Totally. Smitten. With. HUGH LAURIE!!!!!!!
Hugh Laurie is the new primetime hottie. It took me a while but I finally watched an episode of House and am totally hooked on both the character and the actor.
I've always thought he was a hot lookin guy (I mean if you're watching Stuart Little and you start having fantasies involving Mr. Little, I think its a sign the guy's got something attractive under that nerdy exterior. I think it was the whole good w/ kids attractiveness) Over the years in various places Black Adder, Sense and Sensibility, Friends, it seems whenever he shows up, he catches my eye and puts a mmm "phwoar" thought in my head but somehow (and I suspect his fairly bland sounding name) he fades into the background afterwards. Ah, but not this time my friends. After watching House and getting totally hot and bothered over his grouchy yet do-good character, I looked him up and the more I read about him the more I was attracted. Adding up these attractive points:
Number 1 - He went to Cambridge and has a degree in Archeology! We all know full and well by now how a well educated man gets me hot under the collar....roawr (points for being brainy)
Number 2 - He has battled Depression and "other problems" and talks about it a candid fashion with inteligence and truth. It definitely made a connection to me (admiration points)
Number 3- He was a great boatman. Rowed in Cambridge as "strongman" which I can only guess at what it means but it sounds darn good (mmm athletic. a fluffy eye candy bonus point)
Number 4 - He plays piano, harmonica, sax, guitar and when i say play, plays them significantly well! (musiciant too! more bonus points!)
Number 5 - His best friend is Stephen Fry! He dated my personal hero Emma Thompson! (another very close friend) (lots of bonus points!)
Number 6 - He has a British accent. And he does a very convincing American accent. Unlike sorry to say, many well know brits (very impressed. bonus points!)
Number 7 - Is extremely funny in the British funny (the best kind of funny) sort of way w/ a track record to prove it. Collaborations w/ Stephen Fry, lovely comic timing in much of his work - anyone see Sense and Sensibility?? and often present in his interviews, etc etc (love a funny man. a shower of points)
Number 8 - He wrote a freaking novel. And none of those mastorbatory crap "celebs" dish out. Actually a very well reviewed novel called the Gun Seller. (In awe bonus points)
Number 9 - An extremely humble, self depracating guy. (awww. bonus points!)
Number 10 - He rides and has a passion for motorcycles (ooh a little edgy. Points!)
Number 11 - He likes to box like our favorte main man here. Used to hate this sport but have grown interested in the ballet of it all - Ali, Million Dollar Baby, Bowie, and now Laurie. (points!)
Number 12 - Hi, have you seeeen House? That scruffy beard and his biceps fits his shirt well oooaaahhh (bonus points! bonus points!)
Number 13- And finally he LOVES Muddy Water and the blues. (Ding ding ding ding! About a billion bonus points!)
Final calculation: About a gazillion points for sexiness!!! Now to end w/ gratuitous amount of Laurie pics...
