AIDS Walk Houston on Sunday, March 11
March 08, 2007 10:48PM
It's been 18 years since I participated in this event. This year I am walking in honor of William "Billy" Parker III, a dear friend from my youth with whom I reconnected a couple of years before his death in 1995. If you are interested in donating, please go to my personal page . Donations for this year's walk will be accepted up to April 13, 2007.
Thanks!
Home Sick
December 05, 2006 02:11PM
No, not homesick, but at home, sick.
I know, bad grammar. Anyway this is my second day at home. I feel like crap, but my obvious symptoms are minimal. That's how it is when I get sick. I can get knocked out by the slightest little bug. All I really have is some congestion, a sore throat, and a tummy ache, but I feel as fatigued as if I had the flu. And my dreams the past 2 nights haven't helped any. I swear I was waking up every 30 minutes. I kept dreaming that I was reviewing an address list on a spreadsheet (which is something I have actually been doing recently at work). And since I kept waking up, I felt like I had really been working.
Maybe if I got something to help me sleep through the night, I wouldn't feel quite so ill.
Sassy and I paint the town red

I forced Sassy to go out last night for *her* birthday.
We started the night with dinner at El Paraiso, a restaurant we first went to in 1985 after helping Mike Z move. Their Enchiladas Mexicanas have been a fave of mine ever since. I've tried similar dishes at other restaurants, but none compare. In the 80s they were a tiny little taqueria and you could get a plate of 3 enchiladas, refried beans and rice for $3.50. The size of the restaurant has steadily expanded over the years, and they've prettied it up, so now the same meal costs $8.95. Mexican food should be inexpensive, so we now save this place for special occasions.
After dinner, we went to Numbers. I don't think I've been there since seeing Gary Numan in 1998. I used to go dancing there fairly regularly in the 80s, and have caught quite a few awesome shows there, too. One that comes to mind is Iggy Pop in 1983. He smashed some girl's glasses. We were all packed in there so tight that I fainted. Good times...
Well, last night we were there to see Mates of State. First we had to suffer through Spain Colored Orange, a local band apparently built around a trumpet. They were competent, but totally unengaging.
The second band was from New York, Asobi Seksu . They were much more interesting. Sometimes the vocals were so high they were annoying, but overall I liked the contrast between their smoothness and the reverb and grinding of the guitars and organ.
Mates of State was great. I love how their vocals sound when they sing together. And I'm always impressed when a small band can make such a large sound. Their songs are brief and contain enough change-ups to remain interesting. I have wanted to see this band for about 3 years now, but this was my first real opportunity. I wish we could have made it through the whole set, but Sassy's mommy schedule had her falling asleep on her feet. As such, we made it through about 6 songs and had to leave. She was a real trooper, though.
Happy Birthday, Sassy!
