AUTUMN OLIVE JAM
October 16, 2009 07:27AM
These berries grow wild all over the place and since I read this, decided to make some jam: www.psa-rising.com/eatingwell/wild-foods/autumnolive.htm
Now as you can tell after reading that, IF you did indeed read that, this jam should be goooooood for us!
Here is the recipe for those of you of a curious mind:
Recipe for Autumn Olive Jam
Gather 8 cups of ripe autumn olive berries. (For me in coastal Massachusetts, the pick date is September 25)
Add 1 cup of water to the 8 cups of berries and bring to a boil then simmer for 20 minutes. Run the mash through a sieve and you will have about 5 cups of pressed fruit.
Measure out 3 ½ cups of sugar. Take ¼ cup of the measured sugar and mix it with the contents of a package of no-sugar-needed Sure Jell. Mix it in with the pressed fruit and bring to a rolling boil. Add the remainder of the sugar to the boiling liquid and return to a rolling boil and let it boil for one minute.
Then can according to canning directions and cool.
I ended up with a little more than six 8 oz. jars of well set jam. Nice and tart.

Well, Fall is upon us, and harvest is in full swing. The sunflowers will be harvested within a couple of weeks. We are hoping for a very good harvest.
Other things I have done was to enclose and area in with fence for the horses that had not been pastured in years. It has lots of nice trees and should be a welcome place to hang out for them in the winter especially, during the times we let them out. For now, they are devouring what grass they can find. Of course, the deer have been living in there also, and seem to not have any respect for that fence. It is a daily chore to walk around it and keep it mended.
Good exercise for me.
Mari has started the 10th grade, and has a Marching Band competition they are working hard for that is on Wednesday. I hope they do well. They will be about the smallest school there, but it will be a good experience for them.
So...................I feel led to have a ROLL CALL! lol......
Who is still out there? Anyone there? I hope to hear from you. In the meantime, have a great weekend, all.

IT'S THAT TIME AGAIN

The sunflowers are once again in blossom. This is our "smaller" field this year, about 10 acres. The picture was taken late in the afternoon so I was looking a bit in to the sunshine. I will try to get some morning pictures of our other field of 25 or so acres.
If you remember, the sunflower heads search for and follow the sun only until they are fully open. Therefore the open flowers all facing east, and being afternoon I was looking in to the already descending sun. Yep, morning pictures should look really nice.
So, how are you all? Anyone still here?
You know, I can stay away for literally months, and when I come back there are still no changes or "upgrades." Is there still talk of that?
Let me know how y'all are doing. Have a great rest of the week and upcoming weekend.

How are you all? Is anybody still around here? Kind of s-l-o-w, it seems.
Have a very happy Summer, everyone.
