tired of hateful people

I'm so tired of hateful people that just live to be nasty.

gentle and strong

I spent time registering more evacuees into the latest "database system". They have no doubt given and regiven their same information over and over. I am constantly amazed at the kindness I feel from the evacuees. They have been nothing short of amazingly patient. No voice raised when I could not answer a question, no frusteration is shown to me when I ask very personal questions about what kind of services they were involved with in LA. I worked will all colours and socio economic groups. One man was a retired colonel that had lost everything and had a hurt foot from walking over 20 miles to a young mother with a newborn and no family whatsoever.

It is seemingly endless, so I just deal with the moment and the person. I try to give encouragement ...blind hopeful encouragement that everything is going to be alright. I have to believe everything is going to be alright. I will believe everything will be alright.

It was a little more organized today than on Sunday...which is good. A hair salon has been set up ... It's in the main hallway... along the way of the Red Cross table, the invisible FEMA table and the AISD table to get the children into school.

With the lack of privacy there grows the by product of a sense of protective community. A post office, a family reunion center, laundry, showers, and of course cafeteria, It has truely become a small city.

Settle

September 05, 2005 10:51PM

Today I worked in the clothes area, sorting out and finding clothes for those who need help with a size or item. Seems like the menfolk are going to need more clothes. Shoes seem to be in short supply, so I will send out a local email to alert folks what's in need. Bill now has an excuse to get rid of that one good pair of shoes he simply doesn't like.

People are sending toys that don't work or no batteries. That was not good. I will be bringing simple colouring books and stickers and crafty things for the little kids to occupy their time.

Some are starting to get word that friends or loved ones did not make it. That is the part that is going to be worse. Once all the crisis mode settles down and people start to see a future, is the grief will haunt the dawn of a new future.

Most of the people I talk to are going to make Austin home. They don't want to go back. I wouldn't want to go back to the place of a terrible experience like that, especially if I rented and had nothing left.

It will be different tomorrow, FEMA has finally arrived and setting up shop. We'll see what happens.
