Time for a gig round up

May 29, 2011 07:46AM

Last Tuesday I was at a gig at the Bull & gate with the lovely Salty, we only saw the last two bands but both where well worth seeing.
First we saw Age of Giants, they mostly did acoustic numbers. There sound was a little hard to describe, sort of folksy, jazzy, easy listening but not really any of that. There singer had a really good voice and they had a double bass and a cajon, neither of which I’ve seen anyone play for ages. For there last song they went all electric with a fantastic song that had strong similarities to I’m deranged.

The headline band where Some Velvet Morning, who I was there to see and had taken Salts to see a couple of weeks before. Loved them, always have since the first time I saw them. They tried out some new songs one I liked, one I was unsure about. After the show SVM’s singer/guitarist came over to chat to Salts and I, first time I’ve spoken to him even though I’ve been going to see the band for 3 years. There have just finished recording there second album, and this week they are off to Moscow them Bangkok.

Friday night it was down to Hoxton. First up was called Weisan, she was kind of suol/funk easy listening, she reminded me of Dutch band Room Eleven who I love. She wasn’t bad, I think I would want to see her again before I make up my mind one way or the other.
Next up was Kentish Fire, they just didn’t do it for me and something about the male singer voice made me think that any second he would shout “Oh my god, they’ve killed Kenny”. They where kind of 80’s electro punk, they reminded me of a band but I can’t think who.
Next up was Halfway to New York, they where fantastic, they reminded me very much of Big Linda. They played rock, the singer had an amazing voice and they where amazingly tight and polished. I will definitely be keeping an eye out for them in the future.
Lastly was Ravens in Paris. My boy sounded fantastic, I didn’t realise til Friday just how polished they have become.

weekend round up

March 08, 2011 05:43AM

It’s been a while since I last did one of these but I thought it was about time to start again.
I planned a little party this weekend, so I took Thursday and Friday off as well to prepare. Thursday I spent baking and tidying. I had planned to go out to watch Mike Ewers do his comedy thing, but I was so exhausted by 7 o’clock that I decided not to and had an early night instead.

Friday despite not having to go to work, was an early start. 6:30am I was up marinating chicken, then off to the hospital gym for a physio session, followed by shopping then home to start cooking again. Everything was going so well until just after midday while I was making mini toad in the holes, I looked through the glass door on the oven only to realise it was on fire. Hot oil had dripped out of the tins onto the baking tray I keep in the bottom of the oven and court alight. The tray was quickly thrown outside to burn out, but the flat was thick grey smoke for the next hour or so. Everything was ready by about 3ish which gave me plenty of time to relax and get ready to go see Ravens in Paris in Hoxton.

I got to Underbelly in Hoxton at 9pm to be told everything was running a bit late and the second band when only just setting up. The second band on stage where called “Made from Satin” or that’s what I think they were called anyway but I’m not totally sure. Anyway whatever they were called I didn’t like them, the vocals were muffed, the drummer only seemed to have 2 speeds, really fast or really slow and I wasn’t too sure where one song ended and the next began, not because they all sounded the same, but because each song seemed to be 4 or 5 very short tuned of different tempos mushed together.
Next up was a band called “In search of” who I really liked they played reggae/funk, and where very good. It was British reggae/funk that reminded me of the stuff I used to hear when I was very little. Apart from feeling very familiar, it was joyous and relaxing. I think they are a band I will be going to see again.
Next up was “Ravens in Paris”, the boys did a fantastic set, they are becoming so slick now. They did a new song which needed a little more work on it, but apart from that they played a blinder. There was another band on after Ravens but I decided not to stay.

Having got in just after midnight, I wasn’t best please when cat woke me up at 6:30 Saturday morning. I wasted most of the morning doing nothing in particular before sorting out the food for my little party about midday, I think I may have over catered just a little bit. Babz was the first to arrive with a Venetian carrot cake (very yummy), then Jackie with wine, then Leah with one of her expletive cross-stitched, Matt turned up a lot later, and luckily he was hunger. I tried my best to be a good hostess (bit out of practice), I think everyone enjoyed themselves. I was left with enough food to feed myself for a week, but as my mum always told me it’s better to have too much than too little. Cat spent the afternoon scrounging food.

Sunday was spent very slowly clearing up, as I wasn’t in the mood to rush. Cat spent the day sleeping, unfortunately for me he woke up 2:30 Monday morning, and spent from 2:30 until I got up for work at 6:30 waking me up every half hour, but apart from that it was a very good weekend.

strange things happen

February 10, 2011 04:45PM

Before she died, my nan asked my mum to make sure each of her sons got a suitcase she had been filling with things she wanted them to have after she dies.
Today my dad opened his and the first thing he took out was this perfume box (pictured above), inside was this clock (pictured above) which was stopped at 9:30.
It's the clock from the plane his father was killed in in 1948, the clock stopped at the time of the crash.
My dad noticed a screw was loose on the face, so he tightened it, and after 62 years it started working again.
