The Funeral

February 12, 2005 09:04AM

The wind is howling thru the trees, the raindrops are splattering on the windows. It's stormy outside. The complete opposite of yesterday's weather when it was sunny but cold and no wind.

Yesterday was the perfect day for a funeral although today's weather would be more suiting with the fact that you just lost a relative. It was quite a contrast with last year when my grandfather celebrated his diamond wedding anniversary. He and my grandmother married during the last year of the war in 1944. One of the very few marriages that took place in that year.

The church service was impressive and touching. The music was chosen perfectly. The words spoken were moving.
Four of the many grandchildren had to light the candles around the coffin. And like the night before at the "wake" I was one of them. To me it was very special to be part of that.
After the church service we walked from the church towards the cemetry. The coffin was placed in the reception room and from there it was carried by me and 9 other family members towards it's final resting place. The coffin was lowered partially and everyone had the chance to say goodbye in his or her own way. Maybe I should've taken a picture of it after everyone had done that, cuz it was a beautiful sight, all the flowers and all.

It was a long and exhausting day but it was an impressive funeral that I'll never forget. Just like I'll never forget my grandfather. Although I don't have much personal memories of him, I do know that he had hands of gold. If your car was broken he'd take out the engine and fix it in just 2 or 3 days and it would be running as new. He never wanted to be in the spotlights and he'd be there if you needed one of his many talents.

His health began to go downhill more than ten years ago. And my grandmother always stood by him. The fact that they married during the war and were together for more than 60 years just proves that true love exists.

Rest in peace grandfather.
